Fast broadband levelling the playing field
Increased access to fast broadband in regional Australia is allowing businesses to better compete in global markets and take advantage of state of the art technologies. The uptake of fast broadband services and learning to harness its potential can see an increase in innovation and provide new jobs.
Levelling the playing field between the big cities and regions with fast broadband connectivity means businesses can grow and diversify into new and bigger markets while the owners and employees enjoy the benefits of living in regional Australia.
The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) has partnered with NBN Co to look at the impact of fast broadband access in seven focus areas across regional Australia. A series of reports is being produced from research by the RAI with analysis of the region’s industrial change and business growth opportunities.
We are seeing some similarities in the potential for fast broadband to impact local business across a variety of regions. Realising this potential is a collective effort between NBN Co to deliver the service and the local businesses to connect and exploit the technology.
Mackay in Queensland was the first region to be profiled as part of a Business Leaders’ Breakfast in April 2018. Tas Webber, General Manager of Mackay Tourism, said in the lead up to the event that with secure high speed broadband, regional tourism can align their digital tools, online presence and engagement to industry best practice.
Other focus areas included in the RAI’s work with NBN Co are Gippsland in Victoria, Mount Gambier in South Australia, Wollongong in New South Wales, Hobart in Tasmania, Darwin/Humpty Doo in Northern Territory and Geraldton in Western Australia.
As the NBN network service is rolled out in regional Australia, the challenge for regional businesses is to use rapidly evolving digital technologies to increase their competitiveness in national and global markets.
