Australia’s population is ageing, but certain regions are already experiencing the effects. In some of our oldest regions, 20 per cent of the population is reliant on the Age Pension. Low participation rates among older workers can be a serious impediment to sustainable regional growth, as it means less income in the local economy and higher welfare costs.
Our latest report on ageing and the workforce demonstrates that supporting longer working lives can lift local incomes and economies. The RAI has developed an interactive data tool to highlight regions where an ageing population is a key issue and where comprehensive regional trials to support older workers could be most effective.
