Australia’s regions and the Asian Century
Released in November 2012, the Prime Minister’s White Paper on the Asian Century examines Australia’s unique position to capitalize on the growing influence of the Asian region.
The White Paper forecasts significant regional development opportunities from increased International investment in Australia, including continued engagement in the resources industry and further opportunities to build an export services industry. It also examines the implications for farming regions as the Asian middle class and demand for food grows. The paper encourages regions to develop their natural advantages, but the policy direction remains unclear.
This brief provides a framework for understanding Australia’s regions in the context of the Asian Century, and how the information outlined in the report should guide policy development.
