The Committee for Economic Development of Australia gathered in Kalgoorlie- Boulder yesterday to discuss the possibilities of the future for this region. Here, employment is mainly through the mining industry with over 28% of jobs being sourced through them. In comparison, tourism and agriculture make up roughly 2% each. However CEO of the Regional Australian Institute, Jack Archer, discusses the importance of those industries and how they could be built up so that the region was not so reliant on their resource sector for employability.
“How are we actually stepping up and engaging with [the agricultural and tourist] markets?” he asks. “This time we really need to challenge ourselves to get out there and build other markets if the local economy is a bit quiet.”
