Calling all baby boomers
Baby Boomers are not just another generation for regional Australia.
The ageing population is changing regional Australia. ABS data shows that regional populations are often older than the national population and Baby Boomers make up 45 per cent of the regional workforce. As a result, our regions are at the forefront of the national ageing trend.
Discussions about the ageing population and the consequences of this for health and age care, pensions and the loss of workforce have become commonplace. These are important issues, but they only focus on the challenges – it is time we also spoke about the opportunities.
Baby Boomers have increased life expectancy, good health, greater financial flexibility and overall independence.
They are transforming the ageing experience for themselves and the communities they live in. Although they are entering a new stage of life, their knowledge, experience, wealth and commitment to their community remains.
The contribution Baby Boomers will make to the future of many regional communities deserves increased focus and discussion. As part of our regional population series, the RAI would like to share your stories about the upsides of the ageing trend.
- What is your region doing to make the most of an ageing population?
- How are Baby Boomers changing your region for the better?
- Are you a Baby Boomer or do you know one who is making a significant contribution in a regional community?
