RAI Research Agenda 2016 – 2018
Regional Australia is dealing with major economic changes on multiple fronts.
The end of the mining boom, job losses due to technology change and fragile global economic conditions are impacting on regions around the nation.
Similar transitions in the 1980’s and 90’s led to significant hardship in regions and a sense of disconnection from the nation’s success.
This experience need not be repeated. The right development strategy, proactive local leadership and smart policies can enable regions to navigate these challenges and grow their overall contribution to the nation’s economy.
This Agenda builds on the work completed by the RAI from 2012-15 and spans five areas of critical work.
It reflects the needs and expectations of our stakeholder community and the imperatives for change in regional Australia.
This includes the need for RAI’s work to span accessible knowledge for regional development, the development of policy ideas and options for government and practical methods and activities that regions can use to lead their own development.
