The regional economic impact of public hospital investment
The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) was proud to partner with NSW Health Infrastructure to conduct research into the direct and indirect economic benefits of health capital investment in regional NSW.
The research, based on two case studies, analysed the economic impacts of major public investments in health facilities in Tamworth and Wagga Wagga. The study provided evidence of the impact that these significant investments had on the Regional community and its surrounding areas.
In regards to economic impacts, both areas saw a boost in local participation during the construction phase and a further boost in business activity within the wider community. Further to this, both Tamworth and Wagga Wagga recorded a significant increase in healthcare jobs within their community with Wagga experiencing an increase of 31 percent in the years of 2011 to 2016 compared to 12 percent in the years of 2006 to 2011. Tamworth increased their numbers from 14 percent to 16 percent in the same period.
The extensive research demonstrates that the redevelopment of hospitals and infrastructure can provide a positive flow on effect within regional communities, allowing for other significant investment opportunities in the future.
