Would you move your entire life for your dream job? Or is it sitting on your doorstep? You may be surprised just where you might find it.
The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) has created a new interactive Regional Jobs Vacancy Map that uses public data to help jobs seekers and regional decision makers get a better understanding of the job market across the country.
Our new tool collates data from the Federal Government’s Internet Vacancy Index (IVI) which is released monthly by the Department of Jobs and Small Business on its Labour Market Information Portal (lmip.gov.au). The IVI is based on a count of online job advertisements newly lodged on SEEK, CareerOne and Australian JobSearch during the month.
To use RAI’s new Regional Job Vacancy Map, simply click on one of the 37 regions on the map of Australia. This will bring up the number of jobs currently being advertised and the categories they fall into.
For instance, in Bendigo and High Country Victoria, there are currently 1772 jobs available – with the biggest portion being Professionals (421). Our tool digs deeper than this though. Clicking on the Professionals category shows there are 122 Medical Practitioner and Nursing jobs available, 73 Health Diagnostic and Therapy Professionals, and 69 Legal, Social and Welfare Professionals, just to name the top three.
It is a similar story for much of regional Australia – Professionals are in demand.
In some areas, such as Far North Queensland; Pilbara and Kimberley; and Port Augusta and Eyre Peninsula, Professionals are still a significant category. But it is pipped at the post by Technicians and Trades Workers, namely Automotive and Engineering Trades Workers.
The takeaway message? There are plenty of jobs out there in regional Australia, at all skill levels and in most industries. Currently, there are 47,000 jobs outside capital cities that need filling. Job vacancies are growing at a faster rate in our regions than our capital cities.
